We analyzed the population genetic structure of Euryale ferox Salisb. (Nymphaeaceae), an annual aquatic herb, to obtain information useful for conservation of this species. A total of 391 plants from 58 populations throughout Japan and four plants from a population in China were sampled and genotyped using eight microsatellite markers. Within- and among-population genetic diversity of E. ferox in Japan was basically low, with all eight microsatellite loci fixed to single alleles in many populations. However, multilocus genotypes including heterozygous loci were detected from three populations; these populations had inbreeding coefficients (F_<IS>) not equal to 1.0 and it is assumed that these multilocus genotypes are produced by outbreeding of genetically different individuals. Principal coordinate analysis (PCO) and population genetic structure analysis using INSTRUCT software uncovered at least two genetically distinct groups within Japanese E. ferox populations, neither of which had a simple geographical distribution pattern. This complex genetic structure may be the result of a random fixation of MLGs through genetic drift after habitat loss and by spatial and temporal admixture among populations through seed dispersal and seed banks.

A taxonomic study of the seagrass genus Halophila Thouars concludes that eight distinct taxa, including four new species, occur in Japanese waters. Past literature indicated that the name of H. ovata Gaud. is illegitimate, thus a new species name, H. gaudichaudii J. Kuo, with a description is provided. Halophila major (Zoll.) Miq. has been reinstated to a distinct taxon, with H. euphlebia Mak. as a synonym. The other three new species, H. nipponica J. Kuo, H. mikii J. Kuo, and H. okinawensis J. Kuo are endemic to Japan, while H. gaudichaudii, H. ovalis (R. Br.) Hook. f., H. major, H. minor (Zoll.) den Hartog and H. decipiens Ostenf. are extended from Indo-West Pacific regions to reach their northern distributional boundaries in southern Japan. Halophila okinawensis and H. gaudichaudii are restricted to Ryukyu Islands and H. mikii only occurs in Tanegashima and Yakushima Islands. Halophila nipponica is widely distributed in temperate Japan except for Hokkaido Island, while the tropical H. major has additional colonies confined to Wakayama Prefecture in Honshu and Tokushima and Kochi Prefectures in Shikoku. Typifications, morphological descriptions, habitat and biological information, illustrations and distribution maps are presented for each taxon. Biogeographical distribution of the Japanese species is discussed in relation to the effect of currents.

The Dryopteris varia complex (subg. Erythrovariae, sect. Variae Fraser-Jenk.) is an apogamous fern complex. Most species of the complex are apogamous triploids; Dryopteris saxifraga and D. varia, the only known diploid sexual cytotypes in the complex, are insufficient to account for the morphological and genetic variation within the complex. In this study, we describe a new diploid sexual species, Dryopteris protobissetiana K. Hori et N. Murak., from southern Yakushima, and discuss its morphological characteristics, reproductive mode, and chromosome number. Dryopteris protobissetiana is similar to D. bissetiana in having slightly bullate scales and a dark green lamina surface, but it differs in having flat, serrate margins at the apex of the upper pinnae. Dryopteris protobissetiana is a sexual diploid with 2n=82, and may be a source of the genetic variation in the apogamous complex.

The taxonomy of Polygonatum in Japan is revised. Nine species, four nothospecies, including P. ×desoulavyi (= P. desoulavyi var. yezoense = P. miserum), P. ×domonense and P. ×azegamii (= P. desoulavyi var. azegamii), and six varieties are recognized. Desoulavy 142 is superseded by Desoulavy 143 (both in LE) as a lectotype of P. ×desoulavyi. It is presumed that P. ×desoulavyi, P. ×domonense and P. ×azegamii are hybrid derivatives between P. humile and P. involucratum, between P. involucratum and P. lasianthum, and between P. falcatum and P. involucratum, respectively. Polygonatum amabile is considered to be a species distinct from P. lasianthum, as in Yatabe's original species concept. Polygonatum trichosanthum is reduced to var. trichosanthum under P. falcatum. A key to the species, nothospecies and varieties is provided.

Samples of the aquatic floating fern Azolla japonica and its relatives (sect. Azolla) growing in 73 localities of Japan were analyzed by allozyme electrophoresis. Six allozyme types were recognized: AW, BW, BZ, TA, TO and YA types. Compared to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) accessions of Azolla by allozymes, the BZ and BW types had the same allozyme patterns as those of A. caroliniana and an artificial hybrid Azolla, respectively; It was supposed that both types had escaped from Azolla introduced to Japan for agricultural use on rice fields. The YA and AW types had very similar allozyme patterns to those of A. filiculoides and A. microphylla, respectively. The TA and TO types shared all allozyme bands except one. The TA and TO types were suggested to be closely related to A. rubra by allozyme comparison. Morphologically, it was suggested that numbers of septa in glochidia (spikelets on male massulae) differentiates the TA type from A. rubra, although only one sample of the TA type was observed. The TA (and possibly TO) type might be an independent species of genus Azolla, or true A. japonica.

A new species, Nothapodytes amamianus Nagam. & Mak. Kato, is described from Amami-oshima, the Ryukyu Isls., and information on its pollination biology is presented. Nothapodytes amamianus is closely related to N. nimmonianus (J. Graham) Mabb., which is widely distributed from S. India to the Ryukyus (Yaeyama group), but is distinguished from the latter by the base of the leaves truncate or shortly cordate, the larger flowers with petals 7-9mm long, and the short but prominent anther connective. This new species is restricted to a small area on Amami-oshima and should be categorized as critically endangered. A key to the Japanese species of Nothapodytes is provided.

Based on morphology and chromosome numbers, Arisaema inaense (Seriz.) K. Sasamura et J. Murata is newly recognized at the rank of species and a new species A. nagiense T. Kobayashi, K. Sasamura et J. Murata is described. Both are diploid with 2n=26 and lack the accessory buds that always accompany the axillary buds of tetraploid plants of A. ovale Nakai. In the A. ovale group, A. nagiense is unique in the inflorescence unfolding before the leaf blade.
